Navigating grief and loss; supporting suicide loss survivors

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day takes place each year the Saturday before Thanksgiving with communities holding virtual and in-person events providing individuals a chance to connect with others through their shared experience and honor loved ones.

The aftermath of a suicide leaves a profound and often devastating impact on those left behind. Suicide loss survivors — individuals who have lost someone they care about to suicide — navigate a complex and challenging journey of grief, guilt, isolation, and trauma. These intense emotions can elevate their own risk for mental health struggles, necessitating a dedicated approach to their well-being.

Suicide is a leading cause of death, claiming more than 49,000 lives in 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For every suicide, it is estimated that 135 people are affected, leaving millions of survivors grappling with the emotional aftermath.

Addressing the mental health needs of suicide loss survivors is essential to help individuals cope, heal, and rebuild their lives. By providing targeted resources and support, we enable survivors to process their grief, connect with a supportive community, and regain stability.

Through understanding and proactive care, we can foster resilience and hope in the wake of loss.
