The Puget Sound Business Journal recently honored leaders in health care with its fourth annual Health Care Leadership Awards.
The nine honorees this year include Arpan Waghray, M.D., CEO of Providence’s Well Being Trust and chief medical officer of behavioral medicine at Providence; and Kristy Carrington, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, chief executive of Providence Swedish North Puget Sound. The honorees were celebrated at an awards luncheon in Seattle on Dec. 8.
The PSBJ Health Care Leadership Awards highlight innovative and influential thinkers whose leadership in health care has had an indelible impact on the region. Award recipients are profiled in special section of the weekly business publication and on the PSBJ website.

A geriatric psychiatrist, Dr. Waghray serves as CEO of Providence’s Well Being Trust, overseeing strategy to drive measurable improvement in the mental health and well-being of communities throughout the Providence footprint. He also serves as Providence’s chief medical officer of behavioral medicine, facilitating clinical collaboration across the organization to reduce variation and spread innovation in behavioral medicine.
Dr. Waghray is leading efforts to improve the mental health and well-being of 120,000 Providence caregivers during times of unprecedented stress triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. These efforts and their impact have gained national recognition from the Catholic Health Association of the United States.
A nationally recognized mental health leader, Dr. Waghray serves as the 2022 Chair of the American Hospital Association’s Behavioral Health Services Council, which helps shape the AHA’s behavioral health advocacy, policy and resource development.
Health care involves highly emotional work that is a part of an exceedingly complex business model. As a nurse executive, I feel that I have been able to balance that emotional side of our work with the business side.
Kristy joined Swedish in 2015 as director of acute care at Swedish First Hill. She was promoted to CNO at Swedish First Hill, then regional CNO for Swedish followed by regional CNO for the Providence Swedish Puget Sound Region. She was named CNO of Providence North Division last July and currently serves as chief executive of Providence Swedish North Puget Sound.
An experienced executive with both a nursing degree and MBA, Kristy has focused on clinical and operational excellence using process improvement standards and performance metrics. At Providence Swedish, she has unified the management of staffing, scheduling and patient flow and has driven initiatives to strengthen workforce and staffing and improve quality of care.
During the past year, Carrington has led the implementation of new care models designed to help frontline caregivers, keep nurses working at the top of their skill sets, and effectively manage resources. An additional priority has been developing the organization’s workforce through recruitment, retention and caregiver engagement.
Additionally, we would like to congratulate Sean Gibbons, associate professor with The Institute for Systems Biology, a not-for-profit biomedical research organization that is part of the Providence family of organizations.
